Berth

2023

30”x30”x 5” table

18” x30” wall

Locally sourced fired clay, cedar, native prairie grass, handmade paper

As I went for walks, I would see in the grass where deer had bedded down to sleep. The handmade paper on the wall is cast from an impression of deer tracks made at the University of Kansas Field Station. Populations of deer have increased in density due to many human driven factors. This density causes many issues, mostly deer dying from disease and stress on plants in the local environment. Berth means, a sleeping space or allotted place. This piece is about care and rest and the necessity of death.
