A seat at the table

A seat at the table was the culminating sculpture of my Art and Natural Resources Residency with Johnson County Park and Recreation District. The sculpture was installed in Shawnee Mission Park from September to November in 2022. The tiles are made from clay foraged from the park and show the progression of plants from native prairie grasses and forbs, then trees like oaks and hickories, and finally invasive honeysuckle. The table represents the idea that humans “invite” certain plants to the table through the decisions we make and actions we take. The sculpture and residency aimed to highlight the work of the Natural Resources team as well as volunteer groups who work to control introduced species that risk decreasing biodiversity.

An artist walk led participants to the sculpture and where they painted en plein aire with natural inks I made with local plants.
