Treefall, 2022, Video, willow charcoal, cotton dress, wire

On September 23rd 2021 a wind storm knocked down willow tree on the southwest edge of Potter’s Lake on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus. The core of the tree had hollowed out which left it susceptible to the winds. I continued to visit the willow. The tree’s fall seemed to go unnoticed.

Treefall is an installation which memorializes this willow tree. A video shows the process of making the fallen willow’s branches into charcoal. This charcoal is shown on the table in the room. A funerary dress once white is now marked with black from the trees remains.
